InFocus Q Tablet (INP-120Q32-PR)

Author Pick:

At $449 (as tested), the InFocus Q is a relatively cheap Windows tablet aimed at SMBs and the educational market. It comes with Windows 8.1 Pro (upgradable to Windows 10 Pro), a sharp In-Plane Switching (IPS) touch screen, and a future proof USB-C connector. It's a competent tablet for the price, but its 2GB of RAM and Intel Atom CPU mean you won't be using this budget tablet for heavy duty tasks or high end gaming.

Our Editors' Choice for entry level Windows tablets, the Dell Venue 8 Pro 3000 Series, has a $179 price tag that's difficult to ignore, but the Q Tablet has a larger 10 inches screen (the Dell has an 8 inches display), three more hours of battery life, and Windows Pro to the Dell's Windows 8.1. Our top pick for high end business tablets, the Dell Venue 11 Pro 7000 Series (7140), has a list price of more than $900, but we think that's well worth it for its Intel Core M processor and 256GB of storage. The Q Tablet has less local file storage, and its Intel Atom CPU is best suited for lighter duty tasks like information retrieval, online form completion, standard office document creation, presentations, and video conferencing.

Design and Features

The Q Tablet sizes 0.41 by 10.5 by 7 inches (HWD) and weighs in at 1.43 pounds. It's lighter than the similarly sized Dell Venue 11 Pro 7140, which sizes 0.42 by 11 by 7 inches and weighs 1.6 pounds. InFocus' tablet is easy to bring from meeting to meeting, and it also fits cleanly into practically any pouch you might use on your commute. The Q Tablet's compact form factor also means you should be able to hold the tablet comfortably in the crook of your arm for an extended period of time. That said, mobile tablets like the Apple iPad Air 2 tend to be even slimmer and lighter, though you will have to give up Windows compatibility if you go Apple. The black, plastic exterior has less of a premium feel than the metal body of the Microsoft Surface 3.

The 10.1 inches IPS display is bright and has wide viewing angles, but its 1,280 by 800 resolution means a smaller viewable screen area and is less ideal than a 1080p HD screen for showing long text documents and large spreadsheets. The capacitive touch screen is responsive and easy to use with the installed Windows 8.1 Pro (you can manually update to Windows 10 Pro for free). The built-in speakers located at the bottom of the tablet point downward and are very quiet. They're fine for alerts, but you will need a headset or an external speaker for video conferencing or for watching videos. To compare, the speaker in the 5.5 inches iPhone 6s Plus is much louder.
